UC San Diego School of Medicine Center for Community Health promotes health equity in the community through education, research, service, training and mentorship. Our Center promotes optimal health in all populations through interventions and research that target behavioral health, chronic disease, and obesity prevention.
The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a group of highly motivated, hard-working and compassionate young people dedicated to improving the quality of life for fellow community residents, especially those residents and neighborhoods that have experienced historical and systemic health inequities. Through activities and discussions planned and led by YAC youth leaders, members work together to make a difference educating the community on food, nutrition, and physical activity issues. This partnership with community youth members is key for positive change in their communities and has shown to be effective due to the success of several projects and initiatives undertaken by the YAC. This year the YAC is partnering with the 9th Biennial Childhood Obesity Prevention Conference (COPC) and leading youth involvement in the conference locally and statewide. The 9th biennial Childhood Obesity Prevention Conference is the nation's largest, most influential collaboration of professionals dedicated to combating pediatric obesity/overweight. Nearly 2000 attendees from across the country are expected to attend in 2017. The conference will focus on how conference participants can address health disparities – including factors such as race, income, gender, or geographic location – in order to achieve equitable health outcomes. This collaboration between the YAC and COPC provides a multi-level and innovative approach to obesity prevention on populations that experience health inequities.
