National Curriculum Standards for the Social Studies
On June 2, the NGA and CCSSO released the final versions of the English-Language Arts and Mathematics Standards but had no plan in place to replicate the process to create Common Core State Standards for any other subject area. For this reason, the release by the National Council for the Social Studies of National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies: A Framework for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment comes at a pivotal moment in the current era of educational reform. As other subject areas create national standards to guide the work of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, these NCSS Standards provide a vision for the future of social studies education in our nation.

National Standards for Civics and Government
The National Standards for Civics and Government were developed by the Center for Civic Education with support from the U.S. Department of Education and The Pew Charitable Trusts. Three thousand individuals and organizations participated in the two-year project to identify what students should know and be able to do in the field of civics and government when they complete grades 4, 8, and 12. These National Standards for Civic and Government are intended to help schools develop competent and responsible citizens who possess a reasoned commitment to the fundamental values and principles that are essential to the preservation and improvement of American constitutional democracy.

Standards for the English Language Arts
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Executive Committee reaffirmed the National Council of Teachers of English & International Reading Association Standards for the English Language Arts in November 2012. The Standards for the English Language Arts is designed to complement other national, state, and local standards and contributes to ongoing discussion about English language arts classroom activities and curricula.
